SXSW, More Than Just a Music Festival

The website that I was assigned to follow is http://sxsw.com and is dedicated to complete coverage of the annual South by Southwest (SXSW) week. To sum up what the week is all about, I’ll use this quote from the National Post, which is posted on the website:

“In its 22 years, SXSW has grown from a tiny music festival in the Texas capital into a massive, unavoidable media beast that reflects, discusses and showcases trends in culture and media but also often creates them.”

SXSW includes a Music and Media Conference, a Film Conference and Festival and an Interactive Festival which “celebrates the creativity and passion behind the coolest new media technologies”.  SXSW also includes panel sessions throughout the week that cover topics like web design and social networks.

The SXSW website is very interactive and contains different entries about the different aspects of SXSW week (music, film and interactive). You can subscribe to SXSW RSS feeds such as homepage updates and Interactive Festival News. The homepage updates include uploaded videos, Podcasts and written entries from different authors.

One of the most recent news posts to the homepage was the announcement of the winner of the 2009 Web Award in the category of Activism – Green and Non-profit websites that are striving to make the world a better place. The winner of the award went to Tweet Congress which seems like a very neat tool for US citizens! It allows people to type in their zip codes and see what Congress members are running in their area, as well as see what Congress members are on Twitter and to ask them questions. Check out the video if you want to learn more!

This website seems to be overflowing with a plethora of information regarding not only SXSW, but music, film and other interactive content which I am very eager to explore throughout the next few weeks! Maybe you’ll see something you like as well?

Bye for now!

Hilary
